Volunteer to Help Wounded Vets in Big Canoe

Vets Help Vets was incorporated as a nonprofit in 2007.  A group of Vietnam vets was looking for ways to help returning veterans who had been injured while serving their country.  They believe that “Never again should a generation of veterans forget another.”

The mission of Vets Help Vets is to provide minor home renovations to help our disabled vets reintegrate back into society.  They do this by providing both the material and volunteers to construct wheelchair ramps, enlarge interior and exterior doors, and modify kitchens and bathrooms.  Their service delivery area is the north metro Atlanta area including Big Canoe, Georgia.

All work is done in compliance with Federal ADA guidelines and local building codes.  They have a licensed electrician who is a disabled Vietnam vet, and their plumber is a vet of the first Gulf war.  No member of Vets Help Vets or any volunteer receives any compensation.

Here are before and after photos of a recent project:

BEFORE AFTER

The group has completed one apartment and is in the process of renovating three more apartments at Shepherd Place and would like to invite you to work on this project.  They are currently removing existing ceiling tiles from a suspended ceiling and replacing the tiles.  Shortly, they will begin painting each unit.

The work is not strenuous, but the fellowship is great.  Please contact me if you would like to help with this project.  We have eleven more apartments to go, so this project is a marathon, not a sprint.
